The policy of the Government of Pakistan to encourage CNG
as an alternative fuel for vehicular use has resulted in the
establishment of 234 CNG stations in 22 cities with more than
200 new stations in the pipeline. According to estimates 250,000
vehicles have undergone CNG conversion and are consuming 20
million cubic feet of gas each day. This results in savings
of more than 200,000 tons of gasoline per annum. On the average
20,000 vehicles convert from petrol or diesel to CNG monthly.
One flaw in this mushrooming of fuel stations
is that entering parties are generally disorganized and have
opted to economize by installing refurbished, used equipment.
In some cases, parties have failed to implement any safety
standards required at stations. Facilities for conversion
etc. have also not been ably presented in the market.
This resulting disorganized sector has failed
to create expected ripples in the market place. Advertising
has not been used to defeat common misconceptions regarding
CNG. The performance of the vehicle is not affected by conversion.
